Christmas is the perfect time to show the readers in your life how much you appreciate them with thoughtful gifts. Here are some ideas for the best Christmas gifts for readers, including both physical books and book-related items.
Gifts for Cozy Readers
For the reader who likes to curl up with a good book and a hot beverage, cozy blankets are always a thoughtful gift. Aesthetics matter for cozy readers, so consider fabrics that are textured, super soft and ideal for enabling several hours of compelling reading.
Personally, there’s nothing worse than having to put my book down and get up to reheat my coffee. That’s why I adore my Ember mug. It’s a temperature-controlled mug with a substantial battery life. There’s an option to sync the mug with a smartphone app, but it is not required. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys the ritual of savoring a favorite warm drink.
Gifts That Keep On Giving
If you have a reader on your shopping list, there are so many great options. To me, the best Christmas gifts for readers are the ones that keep on giving. Paperback and hardcover books are always appreciated, yet some readers prefer an E-Reader. These devices offer the ability to read in bed without disturbing one’s partner. They also allow readers to buy books without worrying about storage constraints, and E-Readers make a personal library highly portable. We’ve used Kindles for years, and currently, we’re proud owners and huge fans of the Kindle Paperwhite.
For the last couple of years, Steve has been giving me a subscription to Book of the Month. I love being able to choose from a curated selection of titles every month, and it’s SO FUN when the book arrives at my door in its cute little blue box. The best part? Book of the Month includes a bookmark with each book and the phrases are clever and hilarious. Needless to say, I’m a happy customer.
Best Christmas Gifts for Readers Who Are Also Writers
Because my audience includes readers as well as writers, I’m offering gift suggestions to enhance a writer’s life as well.
- Retro keyboard with wireless mouse: occasionally I feature photos of my workspace on social media and I always get questions about my keyboard. Earlier this year, the ‘N’ key on my laptop took a permanent vacation, so I added the Mofiii wireless keyboard and mouse combo to my writing routine. It’s so fun! Highly recommend.
- Planners: most writers struggle with finding time to sit down and create. Between work, caregiving, commuting, grocery shopping…life is busy. It’s easy to let our days slip away if we aren’t intentional about meeting our word count goals. This year has taught me that I need to have a planner I love. And I need to use it. I tried the Christian Planner because I scored a sweet Black Friday deal last year. I still recommend this planner to anyone. It’s lovely, effective, and well-designed… but it’s not specifically designed for writers. So, in 2024, I’m using My Brilliant Writing Planner, because it offers everything I need to balance my personal and professional goals and responsibilities.
- Pens: people have strong opinions about their favorite pens. I’m currently infatuated with the Paper Mate InkJoy Gel collection. Makes a great stocking stuffer!
- Reading Journals: many readers enjoy keeping track of the books they’ve read in a journal. Two that I own are My Reading Life created by Anne Bogel, and the To Read or Not to Read Literary Journal. Both are lovely options that any book lover would be delighted to receive.
Gifts for Self-Care
If you’re in a season of life where you’re self-care could use a glow-up, or you’re shopping for someone who prioritizes self-care, here are two gift ideas:
- Kiehl’s skincare There are countless options for skincare, and there is not a one-brand-fits-all solution. Some women (such as myself) tend to neglect their skincare routine, so I decided to change things up. Lately, I’ve enjoyed using Kiehl’s. I specifically recommend the Avocado Eye Cream because it’s a game-changer.
- Your Color Guru custom professional color analysis is a fun splurge. I learned which colors look best near my face, and which are not flattering, and this information informs my shopping choices. The best part? All you have to do is submit a few selfies electronically, and then wait for the results to land in your inbox.
Book Recommendations
I often share about books I’m reading, listening to and adoring via Instagram posts, stories, reels, etc., here. If you’re active on Instagram, I’d love to connect with you. For the purposes of recommending the best Christmas gifts for readers, I’ll keep my book recommendations to just 3 (okay, maybe 4).
- The Secret Book of Flora Lea by the brilliant Patti Callahan Henry checks all the boxes for me: Dual timeline, a bit of historical fiction, sisters, and a mystery to be solved. Both the hardcover and the audiobook editions are exquisite. This is the book I’m giving to the book lovers in my life this year for sure!
- The Words We Lost by Nicole Deese: This is an incredibly well-written, propulsive story. It’s unputdownable!
- Her Alaskan Companion by Heidi McCahan: the K-9 Companions books are wildly popular, and I’m so thrilled that readers adored this one as well. Makes a great gift for the sweet romance reader in your life.
- Bright Lights, Big Christmas by Mary Kay Andrews: a fun, sweet Christmas romance with a mystery that needs to be solved. I enjoyed listening to the audiobook, but I know readers will enjoy unwrapping the physical book because the cover (and its contents) are delightful!
Hopefully, this list has given you some ideas for the best Christmas gifts for readers. Thank you for taking the time to read my suggestions. Happy shopping and Merry Christmas!
