I’m eleven days into this 31 day journey of posting daily. It’s a little bit like having a newborn in the house again … day 11 of feeding, swaddling and changing was about when the novelty wore off and the sleep deprivation set in. But I adore Five Minute Fridays with Lisa Jo Baker, such a fabulous community of talented writers all in one virtual place. I can’t resist an opportunity to join the fun. Today’s prompt: ordinary
Using the prompt, I’m going to write a scene (in five minutes) for my current WIP. It’s a contemporary romance about a female sportscaster pursuing an interview with a handsome, brooding American baseball player trying to make his comeback in Japan.
Deep breath. Ready. Set. Go…
Britt smoothed her hands across her skirt and checked her reflection one last time. It’s dinner. An ordinary Friday night. Relax.
A knock on the door sent her heart into overdrive. Peering through the little hole, she could see Caleb waiting for her on the other side. He held a beautiful bouquet of purple hydrangeas in both hands.
She opened the door and smiled. “Hi,” was all she could say. His eyes met hers and a jolt of electricity coursed through her extremities.
“Hi,” he said. “These are for you.”
“Wow. Hydrangeas are my favorite. How did you know?” She took the flowers and lifted them to her nose, savoring the sweet scent.
“You told me the other night when we were walking. You said they reminded you of your mother.” Caleb tucked his hands in the front pockets of his khaki pants and offered a shy smile.
Britt swallowed hard, splaying her free hand across her chest. This was a new facet of Caleb Scott … sensitive and romantic. A girl could get used to this. She stepped aside so he could come in. “Let me just put these in water and we’ll go.”
Caleb followed her into her hotel room, glancing around nervously. Thank goodness she’d picked up her unmentionables. Fumbling to find a vessel that would do the flowers justice, she settled on the cocktail shaker from the mini-bar. Filling it with water, she tucked the flowers inside and set them in the middle of the desk. “Thank you, Caleb. They’re beautiful.”
He cleared his throat. “You’re welcome.”
She grabbed her purse from the edge of the bed. “Let’s go.”
As they waited for the elevator, she nudged him playfully with her elbow. “Where are you taking me tonight?”
He surprised her by taking her hand and tucking it into the crook of his elbow. “You’ll have to wait and see, now, won’t you?” His voice was husky and her knees trembled. She could only stare, speechless, at his mouth. The full lips, his sharp, angular jaw and that cleft in his chin had her mesmerized.
Somehow Britt knew this night would be anything but ordinary.
STOP.
Okay, that was much longer than five minutes. I’ve never done a fiction post before. Apparently I’m not as speedy as I thought. I hope you liked it. Now come join the party over here.
I love your take on the prompt! It has never occurred to me to try fiction on FMF 🙂
Me, either, Ruth. I saw somebody else try it (Vanessa @Hearts On Guard) and that inspired me. Thanks for stopping by.
