I’m just days away from releasing a brand-new small-town romance, so now is the perfect time to revisit why I adore reading and writing about small towns. For me, it’s the close-knit community, fictional characters who feel like friends (and sometimes more like family), or the cozy routine of stopping by the coffee shop to catch up on all the latest news.

There’s a reason so many Hallmark movies begin with the protagonist returning home. In my opinion, it’s because we as humans crave an idyllic version of home. Perhaps we’re chasing a feeling and not so much a specific place.

If you’re longing for stories with heart, hope and charming small towns, I put together this list just for you. These are all kisses only romance books that feel comforting, tender and brimming with that sense of connection we all seek.

1. Hearts in Circulation by Sarah Monzon

Audiobook narrated by Allyson Morgan

The book covers in this series are so appealing! Hearts in Circulation grabbed my attention with the vintage van, the autumn color scheme, and of course the bookish hooks.

Tropes include: small-town setting (obviously) | grumpy-sunshine | forced proximity | no spice romance

Audiobook narrated by Lauren Berst

If your ideal comfort read includes a sweet romance and a close-knit community that draws you right in, Hooked on You is delightful. Kathleen Fuller brings together small-town charm and heartfelt storytelling in a way that feels gentle and satisfying.

4. To Be Where You Are by Jan Karon

From the Mitford series

No list of books that feel like home would be complete without a visit to Mitford. Jan Karon’s stories are beloved for a reason. For me, her books offer a temporary escape because I adore the cast of characters she’s created. Their struggles are relatable. And every visit to Mitford feels like I’m pulling on my coziest cardigan. Jan Karon’s books offer a reading experience that I feel is hard to find anywhere else.

To Be Where You Are is a wonderful reminder that sometimes the stories we need most are the ones that invite us to appreciate the people and places that shape us. If you love gentle, comforting fiction with a strong sense of place, this series is one to treasure.

5. Meet Me at Blueberry Hill by Lisa Jordan

Part of the Jonathon Island series

For the record, Lisa Jordan is one of my writing pals and professional peers. Something that I love about her books is she writes stories that reflect who she is as a person. When I read a Lisa Jordan book, I know she’s going to offer me a fictional story packed with genuine warmth and wholesome romance, as well as a gentle reminder of who God is and how much He loves me.

Small-town settings have a way of becoming characters in their own right, and that’s part of the magic here. If you enjoy uplifting romance, endearing communities, and stories that leave you feeling lighter than when you started, this is a wonderful choice.

6. The Other Side of Goodbye by Heidi McCahan

Audiobook narrated by Lisa Lynn Sandlin
Book one in the Welcome to Redemption, Alaska series

I couldn’t write a list featuring small-town romance books that feel like home without including The Other Side of Goodbye. This story is especially meaningful to me because it allowed me to take one of the first characters I ever created, Tisha, and craft a fresh start/second chance love story. it’s also the first book in my new Welcome to Redemption, Alaska series and the first book I wrote for Sunrise Publishing.

If you love the idea of a small town filled with second chances, heartfelt connections, and a setting that both embraces you AND functions as an antagonistic force, I think Redemption, Alaska might be a place you’ll want to visit. My hope with this book was to create a story that feels uplifting, wholesome, and full of emotional resonance—the kind of book readers can disappear into and come away from feeling encouraged.

If audiobooks are your favorite way to read, Lisa Lynn Sandlin brings the story to life beautifully. It’s also available in Kindle Unlimited, which makes it an easy one to add to your reading list.

7. One Last Shot at Christmas by Heidi McCahan

Audiobook narrated by Courtney Patterson
Releasing 10.27.26

If your idea of “feels like home” includes twinkle lights, small-town Alaska, holiday hope and a touch of hockey, I’m so excited to tell you about One Last Shot at Christmas.

This upcoming small-town romance brings together Christmas and hockey in a bit of a unique twist: the hockey part is a former professional player who coaches a minor league team in Alaska. The romance is a second-chance love story, plus there’s a mischievous little guy who needs a forever family. It offers that cozy feeling so many of us crave during the holiday season. I’m especially excited that the audiobook is narrated by Courtney Patterson. She’s one of my personal favorites!

If you enjoy uplifting romances with seasonal charm and all the cozy small-town feelings, this one is for you.

By the way, this is the fourth book in my Opportunity, Alaska series but it can easily be enjoyed as a stand alone.

Why We Love Small-Town Romance That Feels Like Home

One of the reasons I think so many readers return to small-town romance again and again is because these stories offer more than just a love story. They offer a sense of belonging. One of the main reasons I love small-town romance books is because they remind us that people can change, healing is possible and community matters.

In a fast-paced world, cozy comforting reads invite us to slow down. They let us step into places where people know your name, where love grows through everyday moments, and where hope still has the final word.

That’s the reading experience I’m always looking for, and hopefully, it’s what I offer my audience as well.
