At first glance, they are adorable. Three boys. Three chairs. Caught in a candid moment that melts a mama’s heart.
But this is the last time they’ll sit in these chairs for awhile. The car is jam-packed with all our worldly possessions–at least the ones we thought we couldn’t live without for a week–we’re sweating from the humidity and minutes from missing our 9am check-out time.
These stinkin’ chairs have been a huge source of conflict. Prior to this photo op, they have argued to the point of tears every.single.time. there was an opportunity to sit here. They rocked the chairs hard enough to flip, lifting the rocker up and conking a certain three year old in the head, then they were never satisfied with the color of their chair…or else they fought about who had the biggest and on and on…
As I write this post, I’m back home in our real house. The demands of this crazy, messy life are creeping in, threatening to steal my joy. While I won’t soon forget their trivial bickering, I can look past it and choose to see the joy in this circumstance.
I can marvel at the beautiful gifts God has given my husband and me: three precious boys that He entrusted to our care.
And maybe, just maybe, when things don’t go my way, I can remember to find joy in the moment instead of arguing with God over the color and the size of the blessing He didn’t even have to give me to begin with.
I’m linking up with Crystal Stine today and her Behind the Scenes post “where we show those photos – but tell the real story behind them. The sneak peek behind the scenes, a look past the edges of the photo to the real life behind it.”

Ah yes, the battle over who has the biggest/most/certain color…it’s amazing what will start the arguing! But they are some sweet blessings 😉
Sweet blessings, for sure. Thanks for stopping by, Crystal.
Oh, so sweet…so my daughter has been spending 24/7 with her cousin this week while we’re visiting my family. I can’t believe the things they argue over. (They’re 3 so there are a LOT of spats…) But when I see them playing and enjoying being together, my heart just melts…I love that they can have these days together. They don’t happen too often. Thanks for sharing and for the reminder! Blessings!
I have three boys myself and love the photo with the chairs. I also have a daughter who the boys would let sit in the yellow one for sure and then squish in the other ones. 🙂 And with all the arguing and comparing, I know I can usually be the worst…constantly not being content in what God has given me and always thinking I must do more to please Him when all he wants to do is love me. Great post. Glad to connect from Behind the Scenes.
Thanks for stopping by, Angie. I love it when another mom comes alongside me and can totally relate to where I’m coming from. Such an encouragement.
Dear Heidi
My husband and I both had a good giggle when I told him about the chairs and your boys! We have two of these precious rascals. Our oldest, now 23, is doing his master thesis in Architecture this year and has broken his right hand on Saturday while he was taking part in a bicycle race from Grahamstown to Port Alfred. Fortunately his girlfriend is an artist so she can help him with the drawing of his designs.
Blessings XX
Mia
I love that you call them precious rascals…even though they are grown. I hope your son’s hand is okay. Yikes. Thanks for visiting my blog.
