Mercy. ‘Something that gives evidence of divine favor; a blessing’ …

There are a few definitions listed for mercy, but that’s the one that resonates with me. This life is full of concepts we pay lip-service to, throw money at, raise support for …

But it’s mercy that brings me to my knees. Slows the frantic pace that is seemingly my life these days and causes me to breathe deep. Exhale. Whisper thanks.

For me, the arena of motherhood has given me the slightest glimpse of the divine favor extended to me. Worn out, weary, slogging toward the finish line that is bed time and the opportunity arises again and again to show mercy in response to my children’s actions. When my harsh reprimands fly, as they often do, that still small voice whispers that verse…a brief anthem for Christ-followers everywhere…

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

-Micah 6:8 (NIV)

There are few things we are genuinely called to love in this life. But mercy makes the list. I don’t know about you, but on weeks like this one, it’s a tall order. Yet I’m thankful the Creator of the Universe knew. He knew we’d wrestle with our own selfish hearts and anger too easily over the most mundane issues. But He extended divine favor to us, a world that would repeatedly thumb its collective nose at Him. Oh, what a Savior.

We’re talking about mercy today with Lisa Jo Baker and a phenomenal community of writers who write crazy good stuff on Fridays. So don’t be shy. Come on over and share your thoughts.
