I watched you this morning, sitting among your fellow third-graders…fourth grade only minutes away.

In between. It’s where you are. Old enough to drive your own go kart but still young enough to weave your way through that crowded classroom this morning and ask me to sit with you. Wonder of wonders, you even sat on my lap for five whole minutes.

My heart ached when you chose to get up and go sit with your friends again.

In between. It’s where you are. One foot firmly planted in tweenerville, your grasp on early childhood slipping away.

It’s hard, I know. You’re learning and growing at a pace that leaves us breathless.

Once upon a time, you were so intimidated by a certain swim test. Lessons, practice, encouragement, more lessons…

nothing seemed to conquer your fear.

So we let you linger. In between. Possessing the ability but battling your uncertainty.

Yesterday I watched you strut confidently across the pool deck, proudly displaying your black band.

You nailed it. That swim test was toast.

We’re proud of you, buddy. And we’ll stay here…in between…for as long as we can.
